A few years ago the seals of the Baltic Seal looked unlikely to survive. Pollution and toxic substances had taken their toll, every year seals were accidentally caught in fishing gear and an epidemic virus hit the shores of northern Europe. The future looked bleak for the seals of Scandinavia.
Recently, seals have made a remarkable recovery, and their song can again be heard across the extensive archipelagos of the Baltic Sea. Filmmaker Hans Östbom discovered extensive breeding ground on the remote ice fields to the north, and then became the first to visit secret islands in a military location off the Estonia coast.
